Matthew McIntyre-Wilson

Taranaki, Titahi, Nga Mahanga

Matthew McIntyre Wilson (Taranaki, Titahi, Nga Mahanga) trained as a jeweller at both Whitireia Polytechnic and Hawke's Bay Polytechnic.

During this period he began learning traditional Maori weaving techniques from master weaver and friend Rangi Kiu. He has since become well known throughout New Zealand for his innovative practice, weaving copper and silver wire into intricately patterned Kete, Tatua and Hinaki.

While exploring his interest in post-colonial narratives, Matthew began developing a collection of brooches titled 'The Price of Change'. This new body of work uses finely cut coinage from NZ, Pacific Islands and the UK. He intricately pieces these together to create new compositions, in the process forming new stories about these old coins and the history they speak of. The new compositional works sit poised in the place between old and new stories.

Matthew currently lives and work in Wellington.
