Kohai was born in Te Tai Tokerau and grew up on her papakainga at Hongoeka, Wellington. She has been weaving for over 20.
According to Kohai, the role of the pouako is complementary to that of the akonga (student) in that both learn with and teach each other.
Kohai specialises in the fine art of muka – te weu harakeke – and adheres to traditional weaving methods and principles as her way of acknowledging the gifts of the artform handed down from our ancestors.
