Ngati Kahungunu, Ngai Tamanuhiri
Fiona says “I have been making kete for 18 years and still enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of creating. Maintaining our traditional processes and techniques is integral to my work, but I embrace ideas that allow me more freedom to experiment to present art that is different.”
She was born in Rotorua in 1958 and now lives in Hastings. Her practice is exclusively raranga (weaving), and her finely-woven kete with their sensitive patterns are instantly recognisable and esteemed throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Her work has been exhibited at Porirua’s Maori Market in 2009 and 2011, and in 2010 was included in “Mai Te Whenua” at the Rotorua Museum of Art & History. Her kete are held in many private collections.
