Ngai Tahu, Kati Mamoe, Ngati Porou
Born on the West Coast of Aotearoa, New Zealand in 1964, and raised at Te Tai Poutini, graduating from the New Institute of Maori Arts and Crafts in Rotorua in 1984, returning to the Hokitika (Te Tai Poutini) to continue his graduate studies as a carver in a traditional Maori school of learning – Wananga.
Through his illustrious career to date, Fayne has been honored with the invitation to contribute to nine (9) whare whakairo (carved ancestral homes) situated throughout Aotearoa, New Zealand. Participating in the development and design of carved pieces for these whare whakairo are a testament to Fayne’s taha Maori, taha wairua (traditional values and belief constructs).
Fayne has been honored by his ‘peers’ as ‘Te Toki Pounamu’ (the Greenstone Adze’) which signifies how important his carving skills are to his whanau, friends and colleagues world-wide. Fayne continues to excel in everything he does as an artist, mentor, and loyal friend through the ongoing many ongoing projects he is associated with.
