Nga Puhi
My design practise is inspired by my cultural heritage in which I draw from my Maori & Pakeha backgrounds. I am looking to embed in my work bi cultural elements of these two cultures and infuse this into both the conceptual and physical aspects of my designs.
An overriding issue that I am dealing with at the moment is an attempt to bring the essence, values and design elements of Marae into our contemporary living environments. It is with this in mind that issues of handcraft, tradition and protocol in relation to concepts of whakairo, raranga and tukutuku are very important to my design practise.
I would like to take an innovative approach to Maori design whereby the use of traditional techniques and customs can be applied to contemporary forms and materials. The use of Maori motifs and designs are used with the utmost respect and are apart of my journey of discovering the many beautiful facets of my culture.
